This article really opened my eyes to what literacy means and what a theatre text can be. I realized that in my pre-class survey I had a general idea of what a theatre text was, but now I feel I’m really starting to understand all the possibilities of a theatre text, and that they don’t just have to be in the form of a printed text. For example, Ms. Ashworth’s activity used the body as a text. This is a new concept for me and one that I think will greatly change the way I teach and what I teach in my theatre classroom. A theatre text is so much more than just a text book or a play script, and looking at activities with literacy in mind can revolutionize the way theatre students can learn.
I also really enjoyed the idea of presenting texts through specific lenses. I would really like to do activities in my classroom where the students take on specific roles, ie: director, dramaturge, designer, actor, etc. By taking on these specific roles for certain projects and activities, the students will have the opportunity to view theatre texts in very specific ways. I think having a focused view helps in analyzing and creating theatre texts more fully. I loved the idea of having students analyze a poem for performance through the lens of a dramaturge. These were ideas I had never thought of before!
