The entire time I was reading the paper, all that I could think about was how guilty I am-- I am the stereotypical theatre teacher. I love the experience. I love getting students out of their chairs and working. One thing that is especially important to note about me is that I am also an English Education minor, so I will be eventually teaching in an English classroom as well. Yet, as I prepare to teach in an English classroom I am constantly thinking about how I can get my students out of their books and papers and moving. I really do believe that involving all of the student, the mind, body and desire, does in-fact get the student to do more. Think about it, if you feel that you are really giving a part of you don't you want to do better?
So I guess what it boils down to is that I am guilty as charged-- I am a teacher that is all about the experience. It may be that I am remember my life through experiences and not lessons, or it may be that I simply just love to see people enjoying learning. But all in all, I don't think that finding the balance between the text, the experience and the requirements of the assignment is vital to any teacher's (Theatre or otherwise) success.
