I feel like each day of teaching is getting better and better. I feel like we're continuing to establish a relationship of trust with the students and we're really starting to get to the substance of our unit. I especially enjoyed today because they spent a decent amount of time working on their own, they were focused and we saw effort coming from EVERYONE. Because this class likes to chat a lot, it's very rare to get the students focused, let alone quiet. Today however, as they were writing their individual monologues, I saw a lot of talent and effort revealed. It was very exciting.
As far as texts and literacies go, I feel like we're trying to implement an array of texts, but I'm not sure how well we're doing with literacies. In fact today, there were a couple of times when I feel like I gave them "text" but I didn't teach the literacy. I think one of the hard things about being able to identify the appropriate literacy is because I am unfamiliar with their background knowledge. For example, monologues were a "text" for them today, but it wasn't until after the fact that I realized they might not know what monologues are. Granted, this is a Drama II/III combined class, but still, you never know. I want to give them all the literacies they would possibly need to access the texts, but I also want to challenge them. I guess we'll see. (BTW, can I just say, I can't wait to have my own classroom! :D)
