forenote: I hate my computer right now because this is the second time it deleted my enitre post right before I hit the publish button.
An assessment model that I really liked in the book was on page 111 with Carol Cain's class. They were going over 200 vocab words they'd learned during the semester and they stumbled around most of the words till they got to a certain set of words that all the students knew. When Cain asked why they responded that they were the words that they had done scenes with. This helped them with their learning because they were involved and had an expereince with it. I really liked the quote on the top of the diagram on page 107 that says, "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." This is so true! I know that when I am invovled in something I remember and understand it a lot better than just haveing it explained to me. Effective assessment models are ones that show not just what the students have learned but what they remember and understand.
I am in a math class right now in which the entire goal is for us to learn and remember. It is not about memorizing formulas or plugging numbers into a calculator. We aren't tested on things that we haven't learned. The professor has made sure that it is a safe place for us to take risks. Everyone participates and we relate the things that we learn to our everyday lives. It's because we care and have had expereinces with it that we retain the knowledge. When a concept can be related to our lives we remember it because we have a better understanding of it and an expereince with it. This class has been a great lesson for me both as a student and as a teacher. This is because it has reminded me that it's about the learning. You can have a classroom that is challenging, enriching, full of learning, and where students care and understand about their learning.
